Creating a dev environment for an open-banking approach to business.

Bancolombia Bank

To unlock new finance possibilities, developers need easy access and understanding of your product.

Start with a seamless developer site experience.

🎯

Our challenge

β€’

Understand the needs that developers present when using a platform that becomes their key-job asset.

β€’

Recognize the best practices of work environments for developers.

β€’

Create a new platform that allows developers to find everything they need to include bank services in their own projects.

πŸ”΄

What we discovered

1.

Written information is key.
Most developers are guided by the textual information you provide about your product.

Not having a brief and complete documentation is a mistake.

2.

Let me play as soon as possible.
For being technological products,
developers expects to be able to play with them right away. The more you make this process easier, the faster it will be for them to determine if the product fits their needs or not.

3.

Don't tell me, show me.
Providing guides and step-by-steps makes life easier for developers.

4.

Building communities is an effective way to bring people closer to using a product. In many cases, the community can detect, communicate and fix the failures faster than the technical team.

🟠

What we defined

β€’ What?

The API market.
It urgently needed a restructuring and redesign.

β€’ Why?

For developers, the site is not functional. Most interactions depended on getting onboard with a group of engineers for at least 2 weeks

β€’ Where?

In a context in which banking services are provided not only to consumers but to other industries such as Startups.

πŸ”΅πŸŸ’

What we recommend and developed

As you can see, the platform lacked many elements that would provide a proper environment for developers.

Bancolombia’s developer portal before the change

β€’ Bancolombia 2022

We started with a great foundation, an agreement with the developers about what was essential for them, for their everyday tasks.

Some ideas, and needs expressed by the developers

β€’ Bancolombia 2022

Most of the specifications and discoveries led us to, at first, structure the core of the project.

The documentation.

It was not easy, the specificity of the content limited us to what we could achieve in terms of architecture and functionality. At the end of the process we can share an interface, whose central function is to be able to be read and used by developers.

So,

What I learned?

In this project I learned as a service product you must focus so that others can make use of your platforms.

How, in such a technical environment, we must rethink the conventions that as designers we have accepted and internalized for people.

In this case, having too much information is not a problem and how you use it allows you to play with other elements that in other circumstances would not be commonly accepted.
